Coping with Change and Transitions

Change is inevitable in life and not always easy to cope with. Here are a few things to consider if you are experiencing a change or transition.

Change can be expected and unexpected.

Expected changes include the transitions in life that we may anticipate. This could include changes such as aging, graduating or living on your own. However, there are also many changes and transitions that may happen unexpectedly such as, being laid off, getting engaged, a medical diagnosis. Regardless of the change being expected or unexpected, there are often a variety of feelings and emotions affiliated.

Allow yourself space to grieve

One of the most common feelings associated with change and transitions is a sense of loss. This is common because life as you may have known it will now be different. Grief is a complex emotional response often triggered by loss. When experiencing any change, it is important to take a moment to acknowledge that you may need to grieve. A medical diagnosis that requires a rigid treatment regimen may have you grieving the flexibility and freedom of life prior to a diagnosis and it is important to take the time to process how you feel about the changes occurring.

Even “good” changes can feel “bad”

Other emotional responses in addition to grief and loss affiliated with change can include symptoms of anxiety or depression. Even when changes and transitions appear exciting and celebratory they can also be met with these feelings. Imagine finally getting pregnant after years of trying only to be met with constant worry and fear of your transition into parenthood. Or finally getting the promotion you have been working so hard for and being excited for the financial boost but being anxious about the demand and additional responsibilities. In these scenarios, it can be common to overlook the difficult emotions that may be affiliated with what appears to be “positive” changes.

If you are finding difficulty in navigating or coping with life changes or transitions, please do not hesitate to schedule a consultation or session for support.
